Spedo problems

When my spedo resently decided to mess up and I am looking for suggestions on how to fix it. The symptoms are being about 20-30 mph off and a slight jerk and wobble which makes me think that something is binding behind the gague. What are some common problems that this could be related to such as striped gears or not lubed cable? This started to happen after I removed my trim panel to clean the plastic seperator but I dont think that I touched the neadle or gague. Please Help so I dont end up with a speeding ticket. Thanks. By the way this is a 120 MPH stock spedo on a 88 firebird.
