mph gage from 85 to 140or145
mph gage from 85 to 140or145
has any one done this. becuz well i dont have stock tranny i have th350 and i know that the speedomitor is set for the stock tranny. i was woundering if i get a 140 or 145 mph cluster would that hook right in. becuz ive looked at them and where the 80 or 85 mph ends on mind its just the same on the 140 or 145's then only thing id really have to do is either change the needles or just clip off the one that goes for km. so does anyone think this is possible and also where is everyone gettin these white face gages the look bad a$$ and if u change the light bulbs that looks better. well can anyone help thanx.

you cannot clip the needle off of the dual point speedometer. we tried this on an 84 camaro. the needle read very erratically, and the needle was not balanced. you need to replace the needle assembly, as the dual point needle needs to be intact in order to function properly.

I got my white faced gauges from http://www.mikekey.net/fbody/whitegauges/ there by un4givin.
...and like robert said you can't break the needle of the KPH side becouse it will be unbalanced. I found out the hard way when I broke mine off. I'm still waiting for a white overlay for the dual needle speedo's.

I've sold 145 speedo clusters in the past. If I remember correctly, one was to the owner of an 84 Camaro. The electronics didn't function correctly in the earlier car for some reason. At any rate, I always recommend simply swapping the speedo head itself. In this way, you're assured that the eletronics work, that the bulbs work and are in their proper locations. The head swap requires less time than swapping the cluster. Replacing both, even taking your time, could hardly be more than an hour. You can do this, but it will take some time:
I had an 83 Riviera with a speedo that was off by about 10%, really sucks when you get pulled over for doing 76 in a 65 and your speedo reads 69.
On mechanical speedometers there is a few magnets that control the whole thing. One magnet spins, while the other magnet(s) gets pulled by the spinning magnet. It is adjustable, but you have to be careful, you break one of the tabs off and your done.
The way it works is, the more of a gap between the spinning magnet & the drag magnet the less of a reaction they cause. By simply spreading the magnets you could design a Speedo with any mph you want to 140 or 200 speedo. The problem is, you will have to play with it until it is right to get the correct setting.
How you adjust it is simple enough, go find yourself a nice stretch of HIGHWAY, where you have mile markers. The markers should be close to EXACT, and you can time the how long it takes you to go from one to another.
Have a passenger use a stopwatch, & drive exactly 60mph. If you go 1 mile and it takes you EXACTLY 1 min then you are going 60Mph. If it takes you less than a min to go one mile, then your going faster than indicated. If it takes you more than a min, then your speedo is too fast.
Once you have it close, go for several miles, and time the interval. you can get it really close that way. Takes a few hours to get it right.
The Odometer does not change because it is controlled by a seperate set of gears.
Something to think about.
It is risky, so my advise to you or anyone thinking about doing it is get a speedo from a salvage yard to mess with.
