Is it a common problem that the paint in the engine bay is of poor quality?
Right now Im doing some engine work on mine and was going to clean up the engine bay while it was a little less crowded. To my big surprise several of the areas that I thought were just real dirty was actually the paint worn off and the gray primer coming out - is this "normal"..?
I also noticed that if I rub on the inner fenders etc with a towl, the paint comes right off - WTF?

Anyone else have similar problems?

YUP, my engine bay is all dull and looks like crap in areas. Thats why i take pictures far away .. lol

Most engines bays paint look bad also because of the heat of the engine. I know it doesn't help!!!

I do not know what year they started doing this, but my 87, most of the black brackets were powdercoated not painted from the factory.

It might be 87.

Powdercoat holds up alot better to the heat.

When we pulled the motor out of the bird, I painted the engine bay satin black. I think it looks pretty sweet. Its holding up pretty good too.

Hmm. . . that kinda makes me wonder because my 91 Firebird's engine bay (white) has held up great.

 

had the same thing happen to mine when I was putting my new motor it,,not everyware but around the radiator was the worst.Paint wiped right off like it was still wet.now its nice and gray there.I didn'd wipe so hard after that.
