Ok, I want to strip off all the paint on my firebird, do body work and put it in primer. all I have is a car port. I don't have compressed air so I will buy a crap load of spray can primer. How would I go about stripping off the paint? Is there a 3m solvent with brillo pads or something I can use? I'm not going to get a paint job anytime soon.

What about an electric sander? Something like this
This is at walmart.com for $62.96. It would sure beat sanding by hand.
Hope this helps.

I've heard that sand blasting weakens metal. Is that true? Also, how would I go about doing the areas around the door etc? Can you set the angle and width of the blast? I've never used one before. Sounds good though.

Using "sand" to sandblast your car panels would probably not be a good idea. You would need a softer media, such as plastic or walnut shells to prevent damage. I have never seen any spray control for a blaster. Be prepared to wear a full body suit and resperator, that sand gets everywhere. I tried the rattlecan one panel at a time approach before. Takes forever and the results suck. By the time you pay for all the rattlecans, you might as well have bought a used compressor and done it right.
Don't use a sandblaster. It makes a big mess and requires a lot more prep than plastic. If you hit any of the glass with sand it will scratch it up bad. You might want to ask the paint shop how much because if you're going to rent all of this it might get pricey. Plus that shop has a lot better facility.
If I were you i wouldn't strip all the paint off, just sand it down evenly, and then where you're doing bodywork get it to the bare metal. I'm getting ready to paint my 86 and the bodyshop told me it wasn't a good idea get it down to the bare metal, just get the clear-coat and some of the base coat off.

Hey Brad, I stopped by your house the other day but you weren't there. You have some nice cars man! Ok, so now that some of the base and clear coat is off, do I just shoot it with primer and work from there to get it even more perfect? I mean, I understand that there is A MILLION ways to paint a car and do body work to a car, but for ME, and what I have to work with, the archives just didn't answer the questions I needed to have answered. Thanks.
