Question on T-5 shifter.......

I looked at a z-28 with a five speed the other day and the leather boot was wrapped right underneath the black **** shifter. It looked really weird but kind of cool. Is this how it's supposed to be? Because on my shifter, the leather is at the bottom of the shaft. If it is supposed to be that way like on the z-28, how can I fix mine to stay at the top? Oh yeah, has anyone cut their shaft so it doesn't stick up as high? Sorry for all the questions, I really appreciate it!

Mine was at the bottom of my shift **** too. (He said ****!!) Anyway, I thought it might have an aftermarket shifter, but upon further investigation, I found it was stock. I did cut about 2" out of the middle, and then welded the threaded part back on. If you do this make sure you have enough room in each gear so you don't smash your fingers. I didn't do this and the first time I hit reverse, I nailed my finger between the ball and the lower, right corner of the hole in the console. You would not believe the force you use to shift, until you have a brain fart and do what I did. As far as shifting difference, it is minimal. Its by far equivelent to a short throw shifter, but a little better.

I cut mine to fit too. I got an aftermarket **** that didnt have the threads but instead it clinged on with three allen screws. I cut the threaded part off plus about an inch. Now it sits nice and low and looks perfect.

The stock shifter should have a small metal ring affixed to the upper portion of the shaft, a couple of inches or so below the threaded section. A rubber piece slips over the shaft and settles on the ring--it's this piece that keeps the boot in the correct position, just beneath the ****/ball. By the way, should you be missing this rubber piece, remove the shifter plate and check around inside the console. That's where I found mine. FYI, my B&M Ripper also has accommodation for the rubber piece.

Thanks a lot man! I will try and look at the bottom of the shifter for it. Thanks for the advice!

I put a WC-T5 in my 82 T/A, and noticed that the shifter is really low as it is. The shifter is untouched and stock. In second, fourth, or reverse, the ball almost hits the cover plate. I think that if I shortened it, then the ball would be below the cover plate. Anybody have any problems like that?

I was surprised at the heighth difference that swapping in a poly tranny mount made, so perhaps part of the problem is a ten or fifteen-year-old rubber mount.
