89'Bird project: paint and body work starting next month

I have 89 Firebird Trans AM, i bought it in 2002, it was white then and rusted. I and my friend painted it Dupont Red then in 2004. Apparently, didnt a good job as it is now flaked out and rusting in a few places. I was a student, but now i am working and so decided to have it professionally painted by taking everything off and first off removing all rust and then have t painted. I am planning to bring out the fenders a little bit out and add spacers to the wheel. I really like the honeycomb wheel so planning to keep it. Attached is some pictures i took in 2004

Re: 89'Bird project: paint and body work starting next month

Now I drew some sketches of what i think i want to do it. I am planning to take it to shop next month. Definitely want to extend out the fenders and want to add the wheel spacers. I want to paint it yellow with the stripes as shown in pic below.
Cannot decide on the yellow i want..so would welcome all suggestions.
a few i like is Velocity Yellow tint coat, competition yellow.

You are going to lose the wing and those exhaust tips too, right?

@1991Sleeper, I am not runing it. I like how the Firebird looks, the shape and the ride. Thats why i have kept it for 11 years and am planning to keep the car for a lot more.
I know most dont like to see a wing on a firebird or the exhaust (I can Change this) i put in.

Can you tell me what you didnt like the stripes, wings or the exhaust?

The paint job idea puts me in the mind set of an old BOSS 302 Mustang. It might work in a more subtle color. The JDM style wing is different. Not my style but it doesn't look to bad. The exhaust tips are hideous! You ain't foolin no one into thinking that's a Lamborghini.

@MASON1259,
Yes, those exhaust looked like a good idea to me then, but now not so much.. probably going to replace it with straight pipes!..
I was thinking of going with Velocity Yellow tint coat, it really looks good on the new 2014 corvette. would suit the firebird too.

Re: 89'Bird project: paint and body work starting next month

im not seeing the yellow for some reason as working? black, gray, or silver, maybe? bright flourseant/kawasaki green with some subtle stripes might work with the tuner-type wing? IDK, i'd probably go dark silver metallicish, with black stripes if you want to make the wing kinda work. black or silver rims, definetly not the gold version. just not diggin the yellow bumble bee look. maybe try to tuck/hide the exhaust so it doesnt look too busy from behind if keeping the wing? JMO.

That red that's already on there looks way better than that yellow and stripe combo. I'm not really in to stripes unless it's done right. Idk just not feeling that color combo. PLEASE...lose that wing ASAP. If anything it's extra unnecessary weight. It looks terrible along with that exhaust. It's already bad enough around here with everyone and their hanging exhaust or sticking out too far. I think firebirds look really good in black or red..white too. Yellow is alright but maybe with a different scheme.

Re: 89'Bird project: paint and body work starting next month

Ok, first you may have noticed no one replied to the "wide body" aspects of your mod. That's because there are no pre made kits or fenders for this, so that means tons of expensive custom work to make it not look like a jeep. Second, using wider rims to match on the front will destroy the handling characteristics of the car. I would recommend forgetting that idea.
Now for the paint: I think more people here would be fine with yellow and stripes if they weren't so distracted by the hideous wing. If you were doing it yourself, I would be concerned as that type of stripe job and that color paint would make all errors really obvious. Those stripes will be a pro- level job. I like your stripe design as it takes account of the ttops and runs them off the side. Be prepared to pay a lot for that paint job.
Finally the wing:
We all have different taste in wings and spoilers, but that is just plain mismatched. Look at the way it's mounted, doesn't look like it fits the car in any dimension, it will always be the low point of that car, seriously, find a better fitting wing.
And of course, pics when it's done !

I don't like the wing exhaust or the stripes I like the color that's on the car now and maybe do some black or gray racing stripes or if you wanted you could go with a tone

Re: 89'Bird project: paint and body work starting next month

Here is picture of the fenders i found in this forum.. But this is little more than i would want, staring a little lower from the top and not going all the way to the bottom..but ending at the ground effects. I have a body and paint shop doing the paint, body and interiors for me.

The dual exhaust is going out.. I like the idea of redneckjoe for tucking the pipes.. will go for it.

As for the wings, I see most of you against it, so what other options do I have other than the original spoilers?

Thats why i joined this forum to get more insights and suggestions from fellow members..

Re: 89'Bird project: paint and body work starting next month

The only thing I've seen so far that will look worse than the wing currently on the car is the existing wing AND the new paint job you want to have done.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you're bitching about the current "color change" paint job peeling and flaking off but yet you want to do yet ANOTHER color change? If you think red peeling off white looks crappy now, what will yellow, peeling off red, peeling off white look like? I would bet the first color change did not include the jambs or the engine compartment so will the proposed new color change also ignore these parts of the car? You've already "ghetto'd" the poor car out bad enough the way it is so why re-paint it the original white or just re-do the red and do it right this time? Doing a "color change" correctly is very time consuming and expensive and if you don't do it correctly (or at least completely) you just phucked up a cars future.

Re: 89'Bird project: paint and body work starting next month

@96BlownSSragtop, I appreciate your comments, and i realised the mistakes I did last time, so this time I will do it right..
The shop is going to take everything apart including the engine compartment and the interiors, strip the paint, check for rust and rectify.
basically the whole 9 yards, so that she can last a long time (I had it a for 11 years, want to keep her for a lot more ).

The shop gave me the option of buying the parts myself, so will get a chance to replace the old parts and put in new parts.
In all gave me a quote of 7500 for paint (not including work for the fenders) plus 2500 for interior..

so this is my chance to do things right, especially what should look out for the paint job so that i can make sure, the shop is doing the right thing.

Re: 89'Bird project: paint and body work starting next month

My advice, Get an impartial third person that KNOWS what they are looking at to help you keep tabs on the shop doing the work. That way you don't get the "Kid in the candy store" blindness. They will call BS or crap work if they see it. Also, IMHO, yellow looks like crap on the 3rd gen Bird's lines.

I saw a few 3rd gen yellow Firebird and Camaro's in this forum and they looked quite good and appealing. I was looking for bright colors.. other one like was the sunburnt orange..
