Interior Lighting

Has anyone put any kind of lighting behind their air vents? If so, got any pics to share and also, what kind of lights were used?

Thanks!

Hey 86NiteRider,

Thanks for the compliment on the hood. I've seen you site before (so I know you've got the same taste

I know some one on this board put green lighting behind the airvents of a Firebird. I'm actually looking for information on this to do to my Grand Am (and I'm hoping I can get information from some one who has been there done that). You know, rather then re-invent the wheel.....

I think Firebretha (I am not sure how to spell his name)has red LED lights or something in his vents so you might try tracking him down.

I had them in my '86 for a while... it was an ok first attempt...

the problem I ran into was you could see the bulb when it was lit, the desired effect for most of us would be just an "erie glow" That'd mean installing the lights (or LEDs) farther down the vents.

Talk to Firebretha for more in depth info

Thanx guys, well, you wanna push the leds back enough so that you cant see them except for eyelevel which is enivetable, but that way when normally riding you can be high enough just to see the glow, pics are on my site naturally, just take a peek, let me know what you think as well,

ill check back often for your questions

Okay, that actually looks pretty sweet. I hadn't considered trying it before, but I do like that a lot. Where did you get the LED's and what power wire did you run them off?

If I decide to toss originality aside and copy you, I'll use a different colour. Promise!! How 'bout it?

FiReBReTHa,

Thank you much for the pictures. As I'm doing this for a different vehicle, my questions I think are pretty general.... I may put green ones in the Camaro some day, but not now. Here's what I want to run buy you:
- What materials did you need (obviously LEDs and wire). Any resistors or anything beyond wire and LEDs?
- Do you know what intensity the LEDs are (as I know you can get them in different brightnesses)?
- Did the LEDs have a specific focus degree to them?
- What circuit did you tap into and how?
- Did you heat glue the LEDs in place?

Any other information from your project that you deem helpful. Like I said, this is for my Grand Am, so I know Firebird specific stuff won't apply (I'm going more for the engineering info).

Any info is appreciated! And thanx for the pics!

no prob guys,

anyways, ill just run off the info,
these are high intensity LED's kinda like varad, except varads are more expensive around 7 a piece at a good deal, whereas i CAN get more of these LED's in diff colors, just let me know so i can contact the guy, because i get them for about 5 for 15$ and they include the resistors on them, so all you need, is 12 V and a ground,

now with that you can then just wire the LEd's to a switch for the power run, and then youd be set with that.

The Focus is shown in the first pic i believe, i want to get two more in each vent so it gets a better Glow, im gonna start pooping those small LEDs allover due to ease of install, plus install looks great.

i Pulled off the dashboard and then drilled two holes on the top of it slightly smaller than the led then i slowly/ carefully made the hole larger to accomadate the LED. ill get pics if ya guys want.

the colors i can get i cant remember, but i was impressed, including white i believe.

and im VERY appreciative of you guys being original and copy cating, keeps my baby orignal, but either way id help

i used a piggy back for the Fuse box and plugged into the ACC circuit so it would be with lighting, im going to see about running its own fuse in the box...

I think it would be much cooler if you hooked up the LEDS so that they changed colors depending the temperature setting. Blue for cold, Red for hot!

I installed lights behind all 4 AC vents in my neighbors 93 grand am gt. What we did was get 2 sets (2 ea) of 3 inch blue neon tubes from street glow, and in about an hour had them all installed. I wish i had a pic i could post of it, it was pretty sweet actually. One thing about streetglow neons - don't cut and extend the wires from the transformer to the tubes! For some reason, must be some load change or something, this causes transformers to fail after about a month of use. If you wanna know more hit me with an email!

i hope i'm not repeating anyone on here; some of the posts were rather long.

go to www.streetglow.com, there you'll find little neon lights similar to strobes only they stay on all the time; i believe they are headlight accent kits. they are little neon tubes less than 1" long and will work exactly how you want. i don't have them on my car, but i have seen others as well as installed them on some and they are relatively easy and glow very nicely.

You can probably get the necessary parts at or through radio shack dirt cheap... you would need to solder on the resistors to the high intensity LED's though...

ok guys, here's the scoop...

"the blue and white is $3.80 each. all the other colors $3.00 each. i dont have a website yet. i am going to get that up and running sometime this winter. i am also developing a controller you can wire the leds to that will cycle them like runway lights, with an adjustable speed."

Just Let me know.

86Bird: Thanks for the feedback Duly noted.

Moving on, I'll let you know shortly whether I'll pick them up off of you or not. Just going to do some local comparison shopping.
Customs usually hits me pretty hard way up here - even on cheap stuff.

Regardless, thanks for checking that out Firebreatha. I think I speak for everyone when I say that we really appreciate the effort Anyway, I'll get back to you soon.
