Gas Sloshing out filler tube

Having been working alot lately and with less daylight and no garage to work in I have not had much chance to TS this problem, though a cursory inspection leaves me basically clueless, but the gas is sloshing out of the filler tube (or near the opening of the tube) and number 1; is spilling out on my paint and number 2; it appears to be a substantial amount of fuel wasted. Aside from being potentially dangerous to some degree. Is anybody familiar with this issue or have any ideas on how to fix such a thing? I have resorted to putting less fuel in on a fill up but that is getting kind of annoying what with such a small tank to begin with. Thanks in advance for any help!

Have you checked the gas line pipe from the fill spout to the tank? In my dads old truck it had a bend in it that allowed and air bubble to form over time and that some how pushed the gas out. Also I have heard of cracks in the line.

I replaced my gas cap for $6 to solve it, the O-ring was deteriorated & not forming a seal.

About the gas cap thing, thats what I was thinking but when I let it run pretty low on fuel and then go to take the cap off it hisses pretty good from the vacuum. Of course for six bucks it really wouldn't hurt to try it.
Papas idea seems a bit unusual I will have to look into that.
Thank you gentlemen.

I too had the same problem.I was so excited when I got my Firebird from the car lot.I just had to go and put the best and most gas I could in the tank.I went and filled her up,drove it home, went inside the house to grab a Coca-Cola,went back outside and smelled GAS,WTF!!!!!...Gas was pouring out from underneath the gas filler door!I made a couple phone calls.Ended up replacing the fuel cap with a true GM one, presto changeo, problem solved.I was sooo happy Check the cap my friend.Hope this helps.

is it a 90 - 92 camaro? this was a GM recall for these years!! I had mine fixed in my 91 Z-28. They replaced the whole filler neck and I bought a new locking cap from Autozone.

Its an 89 RS (not an Iroc but close) I just got it about 2 months ago since I can finally get out of doing field contract work (requires an extensive parts and maintenance budget for truck) it has a 6 cylinder but not for too long and am finding all sorts of degenerative problems with it, I just hope it lasts long enough to make the swap. Any advice I can get on keeping it alive until I get another engine and tranny ready would be welcome
