Cut brace in passenger side wheel well?

I took out my spare tire quite awhile ago....and left my jack in there (figured i may some day have a problem that I could only fix by getting under the car...and didnt want to be stranded) Well it was fine..until about a week later a REALLY loud noise could be heard whenever I hit a bump or something...it was coming from the rear. First I folded down my rear seat thinking it could be the seat belts or something..nope...then I realized it could be the jack. Took the plastic panel off...hit the jack..and yep...loud noise. So i was like...well i dont have a spare (not in my car anyways), and I sure wouldnt want to be working on the side of the road under a car supported by that crappy jack......and if i DID need to get under the car, it would be extremely hot, so I could just wait till it cools down and crawl under there......so I took the bi&ch out. Then I noticed a metal brace running from the bottom of the wheel well to the top...and it had all the holes and connections for the spare tire and jack. Its connected on i think 4 places on the wheel well, and i can fit my hand behind it. So could I just cut this thing out, saving a couple pounds...or is it some sort of structure brace as well? Thanks

i wouldn't bother hacking up my car for the 2lbs. it would save. If i remember it is welded on there.

My first camro's #17 had rotted away at the bottom, I pulled it off, and didn't notice much of a difference (although, I don't know if it was ever solidly attached to begin with)
I would yank it, it looks too flimsy to be an important support, and why would you want to stop the rear quarter from flexing???
