SC Camaro rear hatch lock problem

After switching out my older, worn down strong arm strut supports for the rear hatch today I noticed the door actually doesn't catch inside the lock. There's nothing obstructing the door from the lock or vise versa. When the door is open, looking down into the locking mechanism, I can push a flat head screw driver down inside of the mechanism for the hook to swing around and lock. After coming to the conclusion the lock works, I try to close the hatch but it doesn't want to catch the lock and stay down but rather wants to open up again.

I'm not sure what the problem is and would like some assistance. Thanks guys!

Non power hatch latch, yes? How's the alignment of the hatch panel? Pics?

New struts can do that, try shutting it a little harder, but better yet...You can adjust the height with the rubber stops on the deck or adjust the latch upwards.

Yeah it's a non power hatch latch. The alignment is great. I'll get some pics ASAP.

It was actually doing it before I put the new struts in. The thing is it's only now a very noticeable problem because the struts want to keep the hatch open (silly me, I bought ones for a spoiler or wiper and actually don't have a spoiler or wiper, so they're pretty strong) rather than before when the struts were old, weak and worn down they couldn't support the hatch so it seemed closed.

It's just odd because the lock works as I was able to get the lock itself locked with the door opened all the way by pressing downwards into the mechanism with a screwdriver. Then when I wanted to test the lock with the hatch, I closed the hatch but it wouldn't catch the lock. For example, if the car was flipped upside down, the hatch would swing open. It just rests in place but doesn't close. I'm no locksmith so I really have no idea if it's just a greasing problem or what.

I'll try to get some pictures for you, fellas. I'll look at the lock when I get the panel off to see if I can see what you mean by rubber stops, etc. This is all extremely new to me so I'd have to dive into it. Before I did this I just felt posting would be better as someone might of had the same problem as I. Thanks guys.

Re: SC Camaro rear hatch lock problem

I actually have the exact same problem. I found a temporary fix by removing the plastic cover and flipping the d link (the part that the latch locks onto) around. once it is backwards I can latch the door without any problems.

Obviously this is a temporary fix and when I figure out how to fix it correctly I will update...

When I head to the storage unit Saturday I'll try this. Even if I can close it so I don't have to worry about pests will make me feel that much better. Let me know if you find anything else out! Thanks!

Re: SC Camaro rear hatch lock problem

Not to bring up an old thread or nothing but I found out what the problem was. Apparently I need my key in the lock when I close the hatch or I need to re-lock the hatch before shutting it. It's either "re-locking" or "re-unlocking" the hatch before closing it that makes it work. The only reason I say that is because the key turns only one way when you insert it into the keyhole. I felt like an idiot, but it's my first car and I'm not familiar with it in this manner. Thanks for the help anyway, lol!
