Congratulations! I have a 1987 Trans AM too the same color. I got it for $2500 with only 60,000 on the 305 TPI. Excellent condition until today when it met with the car of an unobservant little asian lady and damaged the front right side. Good luck on your car!!

 

I'm having a hard time understanding how you get 20mpg city with the same engine I've got in worse shape and stock for that matter. But otherwise, best of luck on your project.

good deal... The lovely LG4... I had one of those once, hey in Chevy High performance, they have an 87 Camaro with an LG4 that does 13's

its there low buck buildup, which has gotten expensive...

I just made the page the cut and pasted the link here. I didn't do anything special. I'm really amazed at the gas mileage my car gets, it has a 700r4 and highway gears with no posi, I think they are 2.73 gears. when I put the prolong in it gave me a boost. I get about an extra 1-2mpg after I dumped it in.

Did prolong increase your power?

 

not really but the prolong made my car a little smoother and lowered my temp just slightly. let me tell you a storey why I love prolong so much.
when I was 15 and had my 82 t/a with a 350 and I'm on the highway and my lower radiator hose pops. since prolong says they will pay if your engine blows I said screw it and kept goin (I was very young, no jokes please) my car got very hot, but I made it from north miami to coral springs to a discount auto and fixed it. I had the car for another 20k miles with no problems. I trust in prolong, it proved itself to me.

gee I've got the 700r4 Tranny too, nothign special about it, and I still don't get your gas milage, I don't think anyone here does period. I think you are shining us on a little bit.

I kid you not, I could care less what my car uses for gas. but I just found it amazing that it does so well. what rear gears does your car have. like I've mentioned mine has the 2.73. my car is very slow, but quite fuel efficient. plus I don't drive with my foot in the carb, I save that for the track, if I ever go again. prolong is an engine additive that just coats the metal and cuts friction, this helped out alot.

Are all those pictures of the same car? Externally, it looks exactly like my 87 TA, but different under the hood. It looks like more or a regular red color there...and not a TPI?
I thought all 87 TAs were TPI. Am I wrong?

 

87 was the last year for the q-jet lg4 engine, yes it is an 87, and yes that is a factory carb under there. I thought the same as you and almost did not buy the car, then I did a little research. the 87 lg4 is the base trans am engine, and not to many were made. but I'm happy with it it will make my life much easier.

thanks, for the money I could not find a better car, every other f-body I looked at had been in a major wreck, this one has some minor fender damage on the front left and rear right quarters, but thats it.

Score! Love those wheels on the '85-'87 T/A's. But how the hell did that car get ordered without the TPI engine? But don't despair LG4's are very reliable when taken care of. Good luck on your project.

 

hey ive got a 92 rs 305tbi and got 21mpg coming back from orlando @90-100mph all the way with a/c on and i get 16-18mpg around town with the a/c on all the time. these are great motors if you dont f with them to get minimal hp gaines. good luck with that car. Im from s.fl to and looked around for awhile to find a car some kid didnt screw up. looks like you got a nice one. nice price too.

 

92 RS TBI Camaro here as well. Get about 14 City and 18-20 Highway. I don't believe in that Prolong stuff. Theres a product out there that I advertise a link on my thirdgen site for Florida Thirdgens called the Tornado that is supposed to increase MPG and increase Horsepower. Gadgets I might give it a try later on.
