I'm looking at getting a 145 speedo guage cluster. My car only has 68k miles on it, so will the numbers look F'd up if I get this speedo and turn back the odometer to what's on my car? I thought I once heard something about a silver stripe in the numbers or something if you turn them back. Please advise. Thanks

BTW, it's the '90-'92 setup that has the electric speedo if that matters.

I dont know if its the same as an 87 but i just took the odometer out of my original speedometer and switched it in to the new one

GM cars don't have any kind of a security feature to prevent turning back the odo, its just a major PITA and unless you have patience you'll never get it back together and working right.

This sounds like useful info for when I rebuild my engine this Christmas break.

Is there an exploded view of speedos or are we on our own?

Is there a law against rollback if the vehicle is under 10 yrs. old?

I swapped mine wasn't that hard just have to be careful with all the little plastic pieces and stuff.

 

Drew, look on page 2C-4 of a Camaro owner's manual. Is that true given what you said?

 

Let me be more specific. I had the speedometer on my V6 firebird completely apart. Every moving part was seperated and reassembled. On that model there was no security feature other than intricacy. Its easy to tell which cars have the security feature and which dont. Have a close look at the odometer, if there are little black plastic tabs between the digits, then the car has a tamper resistant odometer. If you see the gears that turn the numbers then it doesn't. Regardless its driven by a motor, bypass that motor and spin it with something and you can set it to whatever you want to, but it'll take forever.

Technically its illegal to alter the mileage on an odometer. unless its documented on the car that the spedometer was replaced as well as the original mileage. In my case the original mileage is written in sharpie on the guage cluster housing, and the VSS had been malfunctioning for so long I don't know if the car had 120,000 or 140,000 miles. If I ever sellt he car the new owner will be told that the mileage isn't 2562 miles like the odo shows, but rather 152,562.
