New Dash Lights
New Dash Lights
Got a 91' firebird and i wanna change the dash lights and console lights, is it a bulb or do i need to get blue seran wrap to cover over? also how the hell do you get that freakin middle console out, do you have to remove the radio unit too? any help on getting the dash apart would be helpful too

This is for 86-89, 90-92 is very similar. i have done both.
Removal of Instrument Panel (IP):
remove top dash pad, the long about 4 screws on top & about 8 on the underside of the pad all 7mm.
remove the lower dash panel (below your dash pocket) three (3) 7mm screws.
This is where it is different...
(86-89) Once you have that off, there are two (2) 7mm screws that hold the piece that would hold your driving lights (to the left of your steering column) they go straight up.
(90-92) You should have this metal piece that is covered with foam & vynal. Remove the screws from the middle of the panel under your steering column.) there are some from underneeth too.
Same here:
Then you have about five (5) screws that go straight up above your IP, & two (2) that go straight into your dash on the left. Do not forget the little tab all the way to the right under that panel on the passenger side.
(86-89) there are Two (2) 7mm screws that go straight up below your IP to the right of your steering column.
(90-92 ONLY) there are some screws under that metal/vynal foam piece to the right of your steering column that go straight in, like the ones on the left side.
Remove that trim piece
From here its all about the same.
then there are either 5.5mm or 7mm (depends on year) screws that you remove for the actual IP assembly (About seven (7) of them). If you have gages, you simply pull.
If you lower the steering wheel all the way DOWN, & unscrew the tilt steering wheel lever by unscrewing it.
the center console you remove the ashtray & there is one screw under there, & 2 in the rear under the arm rest, Pull up. You can remove it without removing the radio Bucket. You might want to pull off the radio bucket trim piecee to make it a litte easier though.
