No - don't use silicone. Use the proper stuff like Mantaguy said. 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Just don't get any on your paint, especially if it is fresh as the solvents will lift the paint.

Re: weatherstripping glue

theres clear stuff that looks like silicon i thought thats what it was you can get it at home depot for weatherstripping adhesive. hmm my bad. i personally don tlike 3m never had good experiences with them and they seem more expensive than something that isnt directly advertised for the same purpose yet works better for less.

Re: weatherstripping glue

I used a combination of the 3M weatherstripping adhesive and the 3M windshield rope caulk. I noticed that the adhesive got hard and cracked over time, and the rope caulk remains soft and pliable. You can roll it out to a thinner rope than it is and apply it anywhere you would apply the adhesive. It will make it a lot easier to remove and reinstall again if you ever have to do it again.

Re: weatherstripping glue

Whats the difference between the yellow and black weather stripping adhehesive? I see both at auto store and they both say same thing on package. Is it really just a preference of color?

Re: weatherstripping glue

The paint will lift, especially if it is fresh. That stuff has a very strong solvent in it. Use tape to mask off the areas next to a painted surface. I caught it right away when I noticed paint lifting in one of the t top channels after the glue was applied.

From the package:
NOTICE:
This adhesive contains solvents that outgas while
curing. These solvents may soften some
paints or coatings and cause failure of the paint
bond or coating bond. Test compatibility in an
inconspicuous spot prior to use

Re: weatherstripping glue

What did you use to glue your weather stripping down with if your paint lifted with the 3m stuff

Re: weatherstripping glue

I used 3M. Just don't get it on any of the paint that shows. Once it dries and the solvents bleed out, the paint bonds itself again with the glue.
It is more an issue with fresh paint.

Re: weatherstripping glue

My paints a month old. I guess I can try it in a small area. I know it takes 30 days for clear to fully cure. How long was your paint on your car before you used the 3m glue?

Re: weatherstripping glue

I guess less then a month. You shouldn't have an issue as long as you are careful not to get the glue where you can see it. Use tape around the t top opening. The glue in the tracks is not an issue and will stick. The only reason I noticed it lifts paint was because I put the weatherstrip in and needed to reposition it. When I pulled it out, the paint came off with the glue. The stuff tacks up fairly quickly. Didn't matter because I just put a bit more adhesive on and put the weatherstrip back.
