Help! 3rd Gen piece next to driveshaft broken!

Hi guys. This is my first time posting something here in thirdgen.org. I recently bought a 1992 RS. I want to slowly start modding and hopefully one day it will look like one of the sweet rides here.

I was driving the car a few days ago and suddenly something came loose and I started hearing a scraping sound. I looked underneath and there's a piece that goes along next to the drive shaft that is connected to the rear differential and goes up to the gear box, but it's not really connected to anything next to the gearbox and is just hanging there. I don't think it's normal and from the scrape marks to the gearbox and undercarriage I think it's what is making the noise.

Does anybody know what this piece is and how it should be held? Am I missing a piece here? Does anybody have any pics of this area of their 3rd gen Camaro? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Simon

That piece is the torque arm. It requires a mount that runs through the tailshaft of the transmission.

Yours is still there. See circled item.

Get a new bushing here. Just make sure you know which way the lip is facing.

Thanks for the fantastic tip! That answers my questions. I'll get that piece from Summit Racing and get this fixed!

Besides the bushing, you need the outer have of the bracket to hold the torque arm + bushing onto the inner piece still on the trans. You'll need to shop salvage yards, or Third Gen used parts places like Hawks .

Hi MoJoe, thanks for your help. Yeah, I actually do have the bracket. It just wasn't in place when I took the pic. But, the bracket was actually falling off since the bolt fell off (this is something else I need to find). My initial thought was that the torque arm was sandwiched between the mounting bracket and the mount, but I tried to pull the torque arm down and it's pretty high up there and it wasn't moving at all so I thought there may be another piece. But now that I know it belongs there then I will try to pull it down. Any tips? It may be because the car was raised in one side and probably twisted the loose arm out of place. So I will try raising the car differently tomorrow.

The weight of the car is pushing the forward end of the torque arm up. Jack up the car, put jack stands under body/frame (at the front end of the rear control arm mount), then you can let the rear end hang, and it will be a piece of cake.

Fantastic. I'll give that a shot. Thanks for your help!
