Custom aerosol can job

First off, I'm not looking for show quality, that will happen years from now when I paint the entire car again. For right now, I just need to paint a used aero wing, door, mirror, new fender, new front gfx, and a used nose (bumper cover).

I have been corresponding via email with these guys about their products:
http://www.apstowerpaint.com/products-all.php

They can mix my factory paint (18U, Dark Jade Grey Metallic) for me in this:
http://www.apstowerpaint.com/product...ne-basecoat-/9

I'll be using this primer:
http://www.apstowerpaint.com/product...rimer-filler/4

...and I'll be using this clear:
http://www.apstowerpaint.com/product...-clear-coat/14

That's all per their recommendations. They also suggested this for sanding:
Grits:
Primer - 320
Color - 1000 or 1200
Clear - start with 800, each coat use a finer one.

All of the aerosol cans are 12oz, I have no idea how many it will take to do what I need. I'm going to start small though. I'm going to buy 1 can of each and start by doing my new front gfx, just 2 pieces, and see how they turn out and how the color match will turn out. 18U is actually a mica and they say they can match it well, we'll see.

I'd like to hear any suggestions or feedback from others here that have done panels using custom aerosol cans.

Thanks!

Alex

Re: Custom aerosol can job

I've done it but don't have any pics now. It was on my old 97 rs. I repainted the passenger gfx years ago. It looked fine but it was just a small area. The door fender and bumper cover are gonna be much harder to do and it not look like a rattle can job.

It will look like a rattle job, no way around that.
My suggestion would be to use a single stage. I've never seen an aerosol clear that was worth the trouble.

Re: Custom aerosol can job

If you get the 2k in a can it should be OK. The limitation of spraying with a can is the can itself. It will not lay down as smooth as shooting it out of a gun. Another will be the paint match. Colors like yours need to be blended into the next panel and you might see an obvious shade difference. For the amount of painting you are doing, you are going to spend a fortune on the cans, as you will need a bunch of them. You might be better off buying a cheap HVLP gun from Harbor Freight and borrowing a compressor and buying a pint of base and a pint of clear.

Re: Custom aerosol can job

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I'm not worried about blending and the shades not matching, like I said, I plan on repainting the entire car in the future when I can afford to do it properly. At this point I just don't want to drive around with primered body panels is all.

After some careful consideration, I think I am going to just go with some automotive paint in a quart for color and clear. A good friend of mine has a very nice gun and air compressor setup, etc. that I need for the job.

Now the question becomes things like reducer, flex additive, etc.

I'll find a place with a color matching machine and take them a good sample to help too.

Good idea, I think you will be much happier with it not out of an spray can. Each brand of paint is reduced differently, so find the tech sheet for the paint (wherever you buy the paint from should be able to get it for you) and reduce it as they recommend. Some guys use flex additive but I never use it and never have a problem. Maybe with cheap paints its more important, I'm not sure.

Re: Custom aerosol can job

For the price of that stuff and the amount you'd need, you could buy a compressor, gun and enough paint and clear for the whole car. Interesting product though. Would be good for doing jams before sending a car out for a full body respray.

Re: Custom aerosol can job

Please dont rattle can your car. We third gen owners have suffered enough. For the $$$ you spend on all that stuff, you can just spend $400 on a Maaco job that will do you just fine until you're ready for the big-boy shop. Doesn't that make more sense?

I've painted a car before with something as small as a 25 gallon oil-less compressor with an HVLP gravity gun. That should keep up with you at 20-ish psi at the gun.
