I haven't had the free time to sit down and actually look at it, but theroretically if you cut out the license plate mount on the front bumper, wouldn't it allow for more air flow and be more like a grill? Kind of like the duraflex gt bumper? I know this would be hard for some states like my own, tx, because we are required a front license plate but I'm willing to throw it in my windshield.

 

i think you would need to remove or modify the crash bar behind the bumper cover for that to work? i could be wrong. you'll need to look at it.

 

The crash bar should be up high enough that it shouldn't be a problem. My concern is that you won't have anything supporting the middle of the lower lip/ground effects anymore and they will start to sag.

 

I've had this idea for years, wanting to completely open the grill, put a nice mesh near the rear. But there's no support for this huge opening. We'd have to add support somehow to keep the bumper from flopping at higher speeds.

 

What about a billet grill that attaches at both the top and bottom of "hole". If it was sturdy enough it would act like a grill on anything else and theroretically keep anything from moving

 

And I dont know, i'm getting pretty nervous about it just because of the front license plate requirement here , i really wish they would just go away with it already...

 

If I could get this center piece removed. I would have no problem whatsoever molding the plate flat into the base of the grill, maybe offset to the driver side opening flatspot.

 

So how would you go about doing this mod? If I remember corectly a car that hawks third gen did had the whole thing removed exept for a little sliver that held a emblem on it. I have also thought about this for years. just never tried to do anythin more then just think about it.

 

See I'm looking to get it completely off grill area. I'm looking for maximum airflow to my radiator. I'm just tying to think where in the world I could mold it that it would look half *** decent

 

If I were you I'd research a little more and try to find the structure of a Duraflex GT front bumper for an 82-92 camaro. They do not have center peice and have a waaaaay bigger hole which means they have to have structure holding it up

 

I actually had a 87 IROC I bought for parts that had this done to it.

 

Did you happen to catch a pic of the front?? I looked at my 82 and I have metal supports and everything behind it, want to know if those were deleted?? Or in a diff place on late models

Edit- nvm I just looked closer at that one... Now that I think of it, it really doesn't open up much airflow with that plate behind it. You'd have to go in and modify quite a bit of stuff. To achieve more airflow.

 

Yeah, there's a whole bunch more there than just the center piece. And since you have a 82 the nose is different than 85-92.

 

I knew the nose was different, I was gonna upgrade to a low profile 85 bumper just to have the billet grille lol. But now I'm curious how much I can modify the stuff behind it to allow more air access

 

Air access for the rad or for a CAI?

 

Rad I don't have CAI, I prefer my cowl/carb setup

 

If your air dam is intact, you should be fine.
