Air Compressor

Alright, I didn't know exactly where else to post this so sorry if it's not in the correct spot.

I currently have a turbine sprayer that I was going to use for painting my car or at least laying down the primer. I've been looking out for deals on compressors because I would like to be able to run impact tools.

I got a good deal today on a gas powered air compressor. From what I can tell it looks like it's a 5 horse motor and about a 17 gallon tank with a tank max load of 250psi according to the tank although the gauge goes to 120psi.

My question is do you guys think this will run an impact wrench or possibly an hvlp spray gun. I'm not sure if the gas powered compressors have a better refill rate than the electric ones. I liked the idea of gas because I won't be using it a lot and really didn't want to run a 220v line to my garage as I'll be buying another house in the next few years.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Air Compressor

Hard to say with the compressor specs you provided.

Typically, compressors are spec'ed by CFM at a certain pressure. If the compressor can provide the CFM at the pressure the tool (or spray gun) requires, you're good to go.

So, you need to know two things:

1. The CFM requirements of the tool or spray gun.
2. The CFM that the compressor can provide.

Re: Air Compressor

It looks like the motor is not original to the compressor and I can't find any hard info on specs for the air pump portion of it yet. I read with gas compressors your about 2cfm per horsepower. The motor is a 5hp motor but that's probably max and 3.5 running from what i've come across so far.

Re: Air Compressor

I just came across this info when researching the pump model.

Model/Part Number: 421-1102
Capacity: 4 - 8.6 CFM @ 125 PSI

Re: Air Compressor

With that kind of CFM your choices of a good HVLP are limited, and even those lower CFM HVLP guns will be maxing out the CFM.
I have a 60 gallon 13cfm compressor and my compressor ran close to constantly while spraying my car.

It does however run all my air tools just fine, but I think with a tank that small and that type of CFM it will be running fairly often with things like an air grinder or sander or air ratchet.
