Firebird to Trans Am body swap tech
Firebird to Trans Am body swap tech
The tread title is a little misleading, but it was the best I could think of.
First off, I am new to the forums and I did do quite a bit of research but I couldn't find anyone who had asked this question. I have even looked for body dimensions and came up empty.
I have a 89 Firebird base and the front and rear bumper covers are cracked and damaged. I have removed all the front bumper components and impact bar The impact bar is bent beyond practical repair and honeycomb cushion is intact surprisingly. I have the ability to repair the bumper but always have been a fan of the Trans Am style front and rear bumpers. So the meat of the question: Are the front and rear bumper covers of a Trans Am and Firebird (base) interchangeable without having to swap the fenders as well? I can do a bit of fabrication and I'm somewhat skillful at body repair. NOTE: maintaining the factory appearance for collectors value is not a priority at all.

Short answer is yes but they have the ground effects attached. You need to change the impact bars and change wiring and add ground effects to make them work. If you are adding ground effects you don't have to change the fenders but you would need to drill them. Here is a pic from when I was working on mine. You can see on mine what it looks like with a Trans Am bumper and no ground effects.

Thank you for the help! I guess the impact bars are the same between models? Any tips on the best place to get the ground FX? I've looked at a few at Classic Industries...

Your profile info is not filled out, so not sure if you are local to Georgia or not, but I part out third gens and always have stuff around.
I have a '87 trans am GTA out here right now with great bumper covers, impact bars, side ground effects, fair to good front ground effects, even the trans am hood.
These parts are all bigger than I ship though, so it would need to be local pickup.
