t top replacement channels

I just got a set of these after reading about them. they look great. Question I have is after I removed the old channels the metal underneath has got some pitting. What could I use to neutralize and remove rust and then be able to spray a weld through primer onto? Any ideas? Can you weld through POR-15?

Just light pitting? I would wire wheel brush it of course, and then use a good rust converter something like

It will nuetralize the rust and be a much thinner coat to weld through. It might flash some, but not like por15 would.
