87 Trans Am Roof Rust Crack

Hello Guys
My car has, on both sides of the roof corner, those rust cracks.
How could I repair or weld them? Is this hard to do at home?

Re: 87 Trans Am Roof Rust Crack

More photos would be helpful -- I've never seen cracks there, although rotted channels in front of those cracks are pretty common. Is there any other significant rot like that in the roof? How are the channels? If it's that rotted in other places, it might be easier just to cut the whole roof off and weld in a replacement from a donor. Although now that I see you're from Italy, finding a donor car over there is probably not an option.

Re: 87 Trans Am Roof Rust Crack

It can be repaired if you are talented with a welder. Best bet would be to get it all cleaned up and take more pictures with some farther away to get a better idea of the whole situation

Re: 87 Trans Am Roof Rust Crack

Front channels are rotted
Rear channels alternate fromm good to rotted
Finding a roof here is impossible or very very hard
I will take some pics and post it
Thank you in advance

Re: 87 Trans Am Roof Rust Crack

Grind\Brush\Clean

Fabricate new pieces and weld them in. Or weld in a backer and build it up with weld and aluminum\flexible body filler (since this area can flex).

Re: 87 Trans Am Roof Rust Crack

I claeaned all the stuff there and that's what i got: seems an hard weld because the metal is thin
The rust seems located all here.
I guess the body cracked and then rusted with years

Re: 87 Trans Am Roof Rust Crack

Is that body filler in there? Almost looks like someone tried "fixing" it at some point.

The only way to truly fix it is to weld in new metal. If the metal is too soft\thin to weld properly, then you'll need to cut it back to a point where the metal is in better shape and then weld in new metal.

Re: 87 Trans Am Roof Rust Crack

Mine was similarly cracked though not as bad. I welded them up before I repainted but 6 months later they had recracked. I've been told with a good set of subframe connectors they probably wouldnt have cracked again. Something you should consider...
