possible major problem

Hey,

I just bought a 1990 Camaro RS, I took the t-tops off and noticed some rust. ALL of my rubber seals look great, no cracks or tears. I then got a water hose, and sprayed the car down... there is a small leak in the back seat on the passenger side. I can't figure out how the water is getting in. After it rained one day, I took the tops off, the t-bar (I think that's what it's called. Its the bar that the t-tops fit into that runs between the passenger and driver seats) was wet. It's mostly surface rust on the t-bar, I think. I pulled the seals out some, and it looks like some water damage has occured, nothing that some sanding and repainting wont fix. (it's under the t-bar, I wouldn't have to even repaint it) But, I don't know how to stop the leak. I'm thinking in 5 years.....it could rust so much it might become unstable. Anyone with similar problems or who can help/give advice, please respond. Thanks

The instructions say it takes 4 tubes of sealant to seal the top seals. I replaced mine this fall during a repaint. I used all 4 tubes of sealant even though I thought it was a little much. BUT,I don't have any leaks. Make sure you take care of the rust before you reinstall the seals. You need to fill the bead on both sides with sealant, to get a good seal.

Even with as nice as my car is (and I've taken great care of it since new), I was shocked to find several pinholes in the metal under the weather stripping when we repainted in '99. Water gets trapped in there and starts the process. I would pull out the weatherstripping and seriously look for any holes under there. Weld them up if you find any. If you don't either reglue your old ones in or better yet put in new ones. You really need to do this anyway if the water is leaking in under the weatherstrip, so you might as well do it properly.
