hello fellow members, my car just got repainted and I'm wondering what size hood I need for my new motor. Once I pick the hood to go with I'll have my body guy paint it for me. I have a sbc with a super victor intake (5.5" tall), Holley double pumper carb, and a 4" thick filter. I did have a 4" cowl fiberglass that cleared all of that I was going to use but the mounting for the hinges were all botched up from the guy I bought it from, so it would only be good for pin on. The reason why I ask which size I'll need since I know the 4" cleared is that I'm kind of interested in the 2" amd steel hood. I'm going to do mostly street driving and it's not a dd. To me the 4" hoods get to much in the way when driving, I'm 5'10" so not short but not real tall either.
Is there anybody out there that knows a 2" would work if I used a drop base filter? I do have an hei distributer by the way.
I know there's similar posts about this but not exactly for this intake. Plus it's 2017, all the other posts I read are older and someone else may have run into this before. Thanks!!
Thanks for the reply! Yeah I'll prob end up having to do that. Right now my heads and intake are off, they got ported out and are 1.5 hours away from me at the engine builders shop. I'm actually pulling the rest of the engine out too now that I have the car back from the body shop. I'm changing short blocks out, going from 327(331) to a 421 stroker. I'm using my ported trick flow heads and ported super victor along with my trick flow cam. It should make around 650 hp according to my engine builder. I think if I throw that 4" cowl on that I'm trying to sell and make something to set on top of the block that's the same height as the intake and carb and put something like play-doe on top of the thing I make simulating the intake and carb I'll be able to get a close measurement. Or just buy the 2" cowl and make it work from there lol.
Sounds like a cool set up, id like to see more!
You could use a string and go across the engine bay and measure how high the air cleaner is. I got a Team G intake with a rpm spacer, with a 650 Holley in top, and 3-4inch air cleaner with a 4" hood. Without the spacer I'm sure a 2" would be fine, so you may be in luck haha.
I'm running an RPM Air Gap and a 4" open filter with a dropped base. The 2" cowl hood I have (GlassTek) barely clears the front/leading edge of the filter case. Maybe 1/4"-3/8" gap.
The Edelbrock website says the carb pad height of the Air Gap is 4.72". That's 3/4" of an inch in the difference when compared to the Super Victor and with a 4" element (and a standard dropped base which I believe is about 7/8") I wouldn't be able to fit it under my hood. A 3" element would be OK though.

Jacobaxeman and skinny z thanks for the advise! It sounds like if I had a drop base of maybe 1.5 inches and a 3" filter I'd most likely fit under a 2" hood. I'd like to run a 4" tall filter but I'd be fine with 3". One problem I might have finding a lower drop base for an in cap coil hei. Not sure if they make them or not, I'll have to do more research. I like both of your guys hoods! Jacobaxeman, is that a steel hood? It looks nice! Skinny z your car looks sharp with color and hood! I'll have to post some pics soon, the only pics I have right now is with the car repainted with no plastics or bumpers. The body guy is still working on those at his shop and will bring them to my place and put them on when he's done.
This is the aftermarket tall spoiler I bought. It's on there for mock up and will painted.
I will have many more pics of the car when it's all put back together. For now this is a sneak peak lol. That's the 4" hood I'm selling. The previous owner of the hood broke the mounts for the hinges and tried repairing it but didn't do a good job so instead of paying to have it fixed I'll just buy a new one.
