Ted from Albuquerque, NM here. Some one hit my 90 IROC on the driver side rear quarter panel in a parking lot and I want to get it fixed. I brought it to the best/most reputable shop in town to see what they recommended and get a price. They told me they would need to fix the damage then repaint the entire driver side quarter, roof and passenger side quarter to fix it properly. They also said the computer matched the paint to two different codes and I would have to choose which one I wanted to go with. Does this sound correct to you guys? I was imagining they would make the repair and then just paint the area that needed to be done and blend it in? See attached pics of the car (before ding) and then the damaged spot up close and let me know what you all would do if it was your ride.

Too deep for that, I can see that with the depth of the dent and that there is another color showing through paintless is not going to be an option. I have a hard time believing that the whole left quarter and the B pillar have to be painted unless they feel insecure about the match, is that original paint on the car, looks a bit deep for that.... Is this the only paint shop you know? Shop around and trust your instincts, don't be afraid to ask for references or to see other jobs... You will undoubtedly find those who just want to do a quick pound n paint, but the right shop is probably in the middle somewhere.

They said paint the driver side quarter panel where the dent is, up the roof and down the passenger side quarter panel. Not the original paint, it is a brighter red than the original red. I can go check some other shops. This particular shop fixed my 2016 F150 when the wind broke my door. I guess I just imagined this was a $500 to $1,000 repair so their $2,400 quote seemed crazy to me.
I'm a painter at a bodyshop and I've got to say that the shop is right. The color can be blended out in a small area, but blending clear is not the correct way to do it, and any reputable shop won't stay reputable if they do work like that. There is no place to stop the clear, that's why you need to paint the roof and the other quarter. If you want to save some money and accept the risk of eventual clearcoat failure, you can get a shop to do a clearcoat blend where the sail panel meets the roof, assuming your car doesn't have single stage paint. Also figure on them taking off the rear bumper, spoiler, and ground effects on both sides. If you need it done cheap, you could have them tape that stuff up and do a clear blend on the quarter and probably get it done for well under $1000 but it wouldn't be done right and I would not recommend it.

I am also a painter at a body shop, and this guy took the words right out of my mouth. The actual RED that will be sprayed is very little......maybe 2 oz.....but the clear has to go all the way around to be done right. No paint manufacturers will recommend blending the clear, and will not stand behind it in case of any failure in the future. The shop you took it to, told you right. Also, when blending the red, you can get away with a shade varience.......its when you try a panel to panel match that you would notice a color difference.
Thanks for the reply’s. I wanted to make sure that this was the correct course of action before contacting my insurance company. I will have them do what they said needed to be done.
