I'll answer my own question....
Yes, sort of. I welded to it tonight. It looks like the welds are attached but I'm not 100% convinced. My skills are not so great with the welder, but I got it plugged up and added a small section of sheet metal to repair a missing part. It's not pretty....
I can't tell what kind of metal that shell is made from - some sort of porous grainy stuff. It's definitely brittle.
Now I just have to see if it lasts.

Its a cast "pot metal" -- I doubt a weld will hold over time. I'm actually impressed you didn't just melt it when you tried.
I would keep an eye out in the local junk yards for a new one, they are not too expensive.

I have a set from an 85 is interested, should be the exact same and has the proper motors
