trans am front lip?

is there a company that makes a front lip or splitter for trans ams i’ve seen a couple for irocs but i’ve only seen custom ones for the trans ams. i got curious the other day and propped up a 2016 mustang carbon fiber spoiler under my front bumper and it looked pretty good it would just take a lot of work to make it fit perfect.

Re: trans am front lip?

It seems to me by adding a splitter that it would stop a lot of air that would otherwise cool your engine. That is what the air dam under the car is used for. To force the air upwards.

I would think that a splitter on a TA would replace the stock air dam causing "cleaner" flow of air to the radiator. It would most likely not be visible from the front of the car since the TA's have such a long nose from the stock air dam location.

FWIW, these cars have gone 200 MPH with the stock body shape (more or less) as it came from the factory. Adding a splitter would disrupt the airflow to your radiator air dam, and could cause overheating issues. If you did add a splitter, you'd likely have to cut holes in the front bumper to get enough air through to your radiator again (just my opinion). I know you want to add it for the styling element, but other things would have to change from that addition I'd think. Just something to think about.

Point well made! Always looking for improvements to the lack of cooling with the grill-less aero package that came on my TA. I had the front grill inserts in for a while but did not care for the look and they never seemed to help with cooling. I have since repaired the stock air dam and added an additional 1.5-2" of plastic material to the stock dam. This and the removal of the hood gasket at the windshield has definitely helped with cooling temps down. The air seems to flow thru better. Was just trying to come up with something that did two things... assisted in the cooling and looked a bit more modern (those splitters on the new Camaro's, Challengers & Chargers really look sweet)

Re: trans am front lip?

Hawk's created this a couple of years ago for a pretty strong build they did for a customer. The project was posted on its website at that time. Then they got enough requests for it that they began producing them to sell. No reviews, but I've neither read nor heard anything bad.
https://www.hawksmotorsports.com/198...plitter-hawks/

They don't offer one for a TA, but this is probably about as close as anyone will find to fitting an 85-90 TA. Too expensive for such a gamble, but a call to Hawk's might get answers to questions. If it was detrimental to airflow/performance, I'd think the word would be out, and Hawk's wouldn't continue producing/selling them.

Thanks for the info... this probably works well for the Camaro as it has a different airflow setup than the Firebirds. On my '84 the uptake of air only comes directly off the roadway and is 16" back from the nose. The stock setup which was a single piece is a discontinued item and the superseded part GM 10118551 is 3 piece unit and almost non existent. I have checked all the GM part houses online and ordered it multiple times to receive a refund back because it is unavailable. I have seen it on eBay... but I am cautious about ordering. I was just hoping someone knew of a design for the 3rd gen Firebirds.
