Grant Steering Wheel swap??
Grant Steering Wheel swap??
I have a 91 Z28 with an airbag. I want to install the 14" Grnt 4 spoke collectors edition wheel. All the shops will not install it for me because it requires the removal of the air bag. How would i go about swaping in the grant? Is there a fuse i need to unplug to shut off the airbag or what?

Besides the illegal part, it is impossable to mount the grant wheel in this car? That cant be possible. I would think the steering column looks the same as all the others after you take off the entire steering wheel assembly.

Grant GT Wheel Is Cool
Hi, I've got a Grant wheel too, flat black 3 spoke job that will look sick in my Bird. All you need it the adaptor kit from Grant, which sells at any auto parts store. On the back of the steering wheel box, you will find a list of kit numbers for corresponding makes.
Lots of people have done this swap, and it looks cool! There are articles/threads that tell you how to do it, main thing they stress is "keep your head to the side of the airbag when working on it." Those things are lethal! But yeah, you can do it. I'm going to do it too, just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe this weekend...

I think if you unhook the battery before messing with the wheel you should be fine. There is a fuse you could pull but i don't know if that would be nessesary.

May not be "legal" exactly, but I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for having an aftermarket steering wheel.
Besides, I've read of lots of cases where people have been hurt worse by their airbag than by the 15mph impact that set it off. Off subject a bit, but I've also heard of body shops not replacing airbags, to scam money, since no one ever checks to see if one is in there.
You are supposed to unhook the battery negative, pull the fuse, and disconnect the yellow wire before removal. One set of instructions I read said the thing can still go off, even after all that. Would be fun to run some long wires to the thing, and set it off in the yard...
There are instructions on this site that tell you exactly what to do. Can't wait to get my wheel on...
