Installed some new Fairchild door weatherstripping. Happy with the product but having trouble with the install at the top, back end of the doors. There’s a lot of material here and it squishes out into the door gap when I close the door. I don’t like how it looks. The weatherstripping is held in place in the door jamb with a push pin. I don’t really think it will fit better if I drill a new hole in a different location for the pin. This end of the weatherstripping also interferes with where the plastic door wedge / shim piece is supposed to install.
Should I cut / trim the edge of the weatherstripping to fit better? That’s going to cause problems if the weatherstripping isn’t molded in solid rubber.

 

Aftermarket has been making "Almost fits" weatherstripping , for as long as I can remember.

My 1989 IROC Z Vert needs new WS and at approx. $ 600 for the kit, I'm not looking forward to buying it.

I hear ya. All new weatherstripping was expensive so don't really want to cut it to fit, but not sure what else to do.

 

Well I decided what the heck and trimmed the weatherstripping to fit with a sharp utility knife. Fits great now and doesn’t show in the door gap with the door closed.

 

OP and every other Car Buff, ought to be able to BILL parts vendors for our time making their stuff work!

The reviews I've read for EVERY brand of reproduction weatherstrip have been bad. I'll probably go with Soffseal for the door weatherstrip...

 

I've used both Soffseal and Fairchild for my cars. Unless something has changed recently, I would highly recommend Fairchild over Soffseal. The Soffseal did not have the plastic reinforced ends like the OEM pieces do. Fairchild has them. Plus, the overall quality of the rubber felt better.

 

You might want to RTV end where you trimmed the seal so it wont absorb moisture.

 

I've had both. Fairchild is better than Soffseal but neither are anywhere as good as OEM.
