Was this style of rear wing a factory option? (86 trans am)

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this style of wing was a factory option or not. The book that I have says that it's supposed to be a black wrap-around spoiler, but I've also seen a LOT of trans ams with this exact style of thinner body-color wing. Was this a factory offering, or just a very popular aftermarket spoiler? If it's aftermarket, who the hell made it?

I'd bet on that being aftermarket. Or a genuine Pontiac spoiler (base Firebird) that replaced the wraparound. The wraparounds deteriorate and often need to be replaced.

It is a factory style spoiler but the Trans Ams wouldn't of come with it, I suppose it is possible that the original owner of the car could of ordered the car with it, I wonder if that would show up in the RPO code? Since the factory wrap around spoilers were prone to falling apart more than likely someone at some point removed it and replaced it with the pedestal style spoiler. How sure are you that it's an actual Trans Am, the spoiler could be original to the car and everything else is replacement, have you checked the RPO code? Weirder things have happen, The car is creeping up on 40 years old.

I think '85 was the last year for that spoiler.
In any case, be glad you have it...

Looks like an 82-84 T/A spoiler, also used on base model 1985-92 Firebirds.

It must of been an option for the Trans Am back in 85-86, If you do a Google image search there are a number of cars that pop up that have that spoiler, most have the wrap around spoiler, some base model Firebirds have the pedestal but there were a number of Trans Am's that also had it.

Check the trim around your glass. the wrap arounds used a special bracket that was welded onto the trim.

Its possible the whole hatched was swapped out too.... in that case look for signs of a repainted hatch too.
