trans am spoiler question

Question about trans ams. I was under the impression that all trans ams starting in 1986 has the wrap around wing, but I see several like this car with the short spoiler. Was that a factory option, or has this car has a spoiler transplant?

Re: trans am spoiler question

I've got the older spoiler. I think there was something wrong with the tooling for the new one early on.

Re: trans am spoiler question

since I posted that I read a couple of places that all 85's got the short wing, and 2nd half of the 86 year is when they changed to the wrap around. Mine is still in decent shape, surprisingly enough...

Re: trans am spoiler question

Ask for the RPO codes if you want to know if that car came with the aero or D80 wing. Reason why I state that is because that car shows some modifications. The hood louvers are painted black and that's not factory for a red car. The bird on the front bumper cover looks too big but that could just be me because even that rear wing looks odd. If stock, I think that wing should be red to match the primary exterior color.

In 1986, you could get the aero or D80 wing. If the car originally had the rear window shade/louvers (DE1), that would also be a factor.

Pontiac : Firebird Trans Am WS6
For 86,the Wraparound Spoiler(Black) was Standard and the Spoiler shown on this car was available as an option but only as matching color

1985 was actually the first year for the wraparound spoiler.

I need to check my 85 parts book, but that goes against what many sources say

Re: trans am spoiler question

Common knowledge says it started in 86, but there have been a few 85s people have posted here (documented) that had the wrap wing.

Re: trans am spoiler question

With the D80 (straight wing as pictured in the eBay ad) as Available. Meaning the Aero (D81) or Straight wing (D80) could be had on the 1986 Trans Am. While I believe the D80 was required for the rear shade, I believe it could be ordered alone.

But if you look at the 1986 order form, it states that the D80 is "N.A." on the Trans Am.

Re: trans am spoiler question

What printing is your 1986 sheet? Mine does not show the DE1 requirement on the D80. That's just something I learned over the years. Mine just notes D80 is N.A. on the Trans Am.

Re: trans am spoiler question

As for the 1986 Dealer Order worksheets
First Printing (5-85): D80 - Opt on SE and Base, NA on Trans Am.
2nd Printing (6-85): D80 - Opt on SE and Base, NA on Trans Am
3rd Printing (8-85) D80 - Opt SE only, Std Base Firebird - Std Trans Am w/Sunshield DE1 (louvers)

As for 1985 D80
First Printing (4-84) D80 - Std Trans Am - Inc. w/Appearance Pkg W51
Second Printing (6-84) D80 - Std Trans Am - Inc. w/Appearance Pkg W51
Fourth Printing (10-84) D80 - Std Trans Am - Inc. w/Appearance Pkg W51
D81 > Spoiler, Rear Aero Wing (Black) - Opt trans Am only - NA w/sunshield W51

There ya have it. D81 was introduced in October of 1985
