Rust repair ideas?

Hi everyone,

I have removed the carpet and noticed some rust where the left side rear seat is located. The rust is near what looks to be a drain plug.

Just wondering what the best practice would be to resolve this issue? There isn't obvious signs of rust underneath the car. Also, from reference, I have another rusted out TA that doesn't have any rust in that area - potential to cut out a latch panel.

Thanks in advance.

Is that the foot well area? If so, I'd look to see if water is coming from. It can be a sign of rust somewhere else. If not. It's an easy repair.

The rust seems to be localised to the one area. I'm removing all the interior to identify any possible areas of rust. There are some random spots that are starting, but it's sporadic, not centralised, and not bad at all. I have taken another photo below. Is there a process you would recommend if it's localised to that one spot? The car was sitting in a shed for 10 years.

That doesn't look bad at all. It looks like the carpet was wet at some point and just held water. I'd clean all the loose paint/rust off and asses at that point. If it's just that one spot, patch it and move on. If it's a t top car that was probably the source.

Yeah, it's a T-top. In terms of patching it, would it be worth cutting out the visible rust area, plus a little more?
I have another car I could cut a piece from to cover the area.

once I have a piece to patch, could I use a seam sealer rather than welding it in? I imagine I'd have to have a patch with overhang to some degree.

Thanks for the support!

Depending on your welder/welding skills you can patch it with a piece that is the same size and weld in with full beads and grind it all smooth. Another option is make the panel larger and make a small lip like a repair panel. Spot weld it and use seam sealer. It depends on your skill level. It's not a high stress area but it's also an are you don't need to worry about heat distorting the metal.

I had some rust like that.... Used POR-15 and some epoxy putty.... It's not structural so I just wanted to deal with the rust and close it up ... Seen much worse...
