Replacement VIN Plate
Replacement VIN Plate
Thanks for the add. Recently acquired an '89 G92 with 45K original miles on her. She's in great shape but certainly needs some work to get her back to her former greatness. While there is little rust on the car, the cowl area has some rust that has impacted the vin plate under the windshield. It looks like the seal failed at some point and it has just about disintegrated. It is obvious that no one tried to alter the plate but rust is evident. Is there a company that can replicate this vin plate under the windshield? I have all the documentation that shows the car isn't stolen as I know that is probably an immediate concern when someone asks this question. The vin stickers are still in place on the rear hatch as well as the motor and various other places. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Re: Replacement VIN Plate
Check with your DMV as to legality of reproducing a vin plate. I think it would be illegal but no harm asking.

Re: Replacement VIN Plate
while my windshield was getting replaced, i used some fine steel wool to remove the light surface rust that was on my VIN plate.
obviously if yours is severely rusted this won't work.

Re: Replacement VIN Plate
That kind of corrosion around the windshield area is pretty common on older cars when seals fail, so you’re definitely not alone. Starting with the DMV or highway patrol makes sense to understand what’s legal before touching the VIN plate. It can also help to review original factory details via a dealer window sticker https://carfast.express/en/window_sticker so you have clear documentation of how the car was originally configured if questions come up during the process.

Re: Replacement VIN Plate
Older thread, but OP hasn't replied in it so maybe the added info is still useful.
I had to have a new VIN plate made for a truck. An appointment and $10 through my local Highway Patrol Office took care of it, and they mounted it with the proper rivets as well. This was technically the only legal option in my State.
