Opinions on Front and Rear Bumper Replacement prior to new paint

Hey guys,

I got my 85 iroc painted in 2010 and it's in dire need of a new paint job. I noticed the first time around about 1-2 years after the car was painted all of the "ripples" or " spider cracking" under the paint in the crappy original urethane front bumper and rear bumper started to appear. Anybody have any experience replacing these with the duraflex bumper, new OER reproduction bumper, or prepping them a certain way prior to painting that these spider cracks don't reappear? I really wanted the stinger fiberglass bumpers but they are not making them anymore unfortunately. Thoughts?

The underlying cracks just need to be sanded out (often down to urethane). Whoever painted yours didn't sand it adequately if the cracks returned in the new paint.

The reproduction urethane bumpers don't fit well at all. You're much better off using an OEM bumper, even if it means a lot of prep/repair work. As Aaron R said, you will probably have to take it down to the bare urethane and get that old cracking paint off.

Definitely need to go down to base material and start from there

Got it! Thanks guys. Didn't think you go that deep. Thought the stress cracks were all the way through the material.
