Original Color

Hey all, I'm trying to restore a 1987 Trans Am GTA. The color now is Flame Red but its defiantly been painted over at least once and it was done horribly. No clear coat and its pretty dull now. I can't seem to find a way to determine if it was originally Flame Red. I tried some vin decoders but that didn't have to info I needed. My question is, is there a way to figure out what the original factory paint color was? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Original Color

Inside your console glovebox (I think...that's where my '88's label is) there should be a Service Parts I.D. (SPID) label with many of the reliant option codes for the vehicle. Along the bottom there will be WA numbers...an upper and a lower.....those are your paint codes.

Re: Original Color

My 1984 Trans AM has a metal tag on the rad cradle that shows the paint code. Not sure if 1987 F'birds had the same tag.

Re: Original Color

Pick up,a 1987 color and trim brochure at the swap. I may even have one.

Re: Original Color

Thanks guys, Of course my Glove box is missing the sticker and there's nothing on my rad. We pulled the engine and the whole engine bay is flame red. It doesn't look like any work has been done in there so I'm going to assume its the original color and just go with it.

Re: Original Color

Lay down the rear seat and lift the carpet, should be body color under there and if someone's gonna do a crap respray they're not gonna paint inside.
