91-92 door GFX, anyone tried aftermarket? (Not under door, what attaches the door)
I am in the middle of building my 91 resto mod show car and got to the step of rebuilding my doors.
Over the years the GFX peice in question developed some waves in it. I figured best thing to do is keep taking things apart, so I removed the prices from the underlying frame. Found a broken stud so fixed that last night.
Taking one apart, I broke some.mounting tabs. Has anyone tried the aftermarket units? I know there are plenty of used ones on ebay, but figure those may be wavy or brittle too.
Also noticed some cracks that formed on my good peice. More reason to replace them both. Broken mounting tab. Welded in a low profile screw. Think it will work to save me a few hundred bucks for replacement frames.
Re: 91-92 door GFX, anyone tried aftermarket? (Not under door, what attaches the door
Yeah, maybe someday. Seems like a huge pain in the butt for welds that no one will see. Especially now that I am done with 99% of the welding that this car will need.
These threaded posts were pressed into the sheet metal stock. Think these welds will hold just fine for only needing to hold like half a pound of fiberglass onto the door, divided amongst five bolts.
But I hear you, would be nice to get something nicer. Just hard to justify when I don't NEED it, and it adds something to refill.
Only reason I can see would be to go TIG/MIG so I can try my hand at aluminum or stainless someday. But I don't see my self needing those things either, at least not for this build.

does anyone know what material these are made of? mine are chipped on the edges but in great shape otherwise and want to repair them but don't know what exact material their made of

Great question. I would guess some sort of fiberglass plastic composite. If you need to repair I would say make sure the area is roughed up and clean, then build up with glass filled bondo to form the repair, then follow up with normal filler to fine tune the shape.
