1984 Trans Am rear hatch struts / supports

Anyone know where to get close to OEM rear hatch struts / supports with electric defrost. I have tried Amazon and the struts are slightly larger and the electric defrost just shut off immediately due to a dead short. I put the old one back for now.

Re: 1984 Trans Am rear hatch struts / supports

I had an issue with the cheap Amazon hatch struts on my car. I went through like 3 sets of them. The problem I had was they were super stiff so yeah they held up the hatch wonderfully. But I could not use the inside hatch button because it shot my hatch up so fast I thought it break. And when trying to close it I thought the brackets on the body would break off because they flexed when I tried to pull the hatch down. So I went looking and found Rock Auto has GM AC Delco struts in stock with the defrost. They shipped fast and they have worked great.

Scotty, does your hatch have the spoiler and no wiper? I am also trying to determine the best strut for my configuration.

I found a thread or two about this issue, they also suggested the low pressure ones from Rock Auto, I just haven't decided on the correct part #.

This issue was discussed a few months ago. Someone found a particular brand that worked for him

Thanks! Your spoiler probably doesn't weigh much more than the regular one to cause issues. I might give them a try.

Re: 1984 Trans Am rear hatch struts / supports

My car is an 89 Trans Am and I used those struts when I had the stock super heavy wrap around spoiler as well and it did fine. It does go up a bit faster with the fiberglass high rise on but it doesn’t try to launch it like the Amazon struts did. With an 84 I would guess you have the low profile flat spoiler. I have friend of mine with a lower trim 91 Firebird that has that spoiler and rear defrost and he has the same struts I mentioned with no issues. I think as long as you run the AC Delcos no matter what pressure you decide you will much more pleased.

As a side note 69-er I also have 69 camaro the one in your pic looks pretty nice.

Cool. Do you remember the part #?

None of them have the spoiler, no wiper combination.

What's your configuration?

Re: 1984 Trans Am rear hatch struts / supports

I couldn't find receipts but I went on there website and the struts that I have are Stabilus Lift Support p/n 1F-061463,SKU# 853375 it supports the wrap around wing and or rear wiper .I installed these at least 10 years ago and they still work fine.I do open the hatch with a key not the dash button because i have a Hawks fiberglass wing replacing my heavy original .Hopes this helps
