Upon checking out my new Camaro in detail, I noticed that the hatch is loose, turns out the motor was welded in place.
Would it be easy to replace the unit as a whole? $$$$ ?

Easy yes. Just unbolt the unit and bolt in another. Inexpensive, depends. The 86-91 hatch pull-down units are highly sought after at the Pick-A-Part yards. If you strike out there, the next tier up the supply chain is the used F-Body parts suppliers. You are more likely to find them having one, but they also quickly sell out of stock and charge $50 and up for them used. You may or may not need to rebuild the unit. If you find it needs to be rebuilt, I can supply 3 of the parts needed to rebuild them (motor housing, gear nut and nylon guides). Or you can go to your local dealer and buy an entire hatch pull-down assembly for around $400. Good luck, Lon.

Thanks Lon
I'll try the boneyard here in a day or two. I'm developing a long list of parts to hunt for, should be fun. The weather in Florida right now is unbeatable. I'll contact you if I need the rebuild parts you have.

Many Thanks,

Steve

Parts
Lon,

You referenced used f-body parts suppliers, are they on the net?
Could you point me in the right direction?

What's the point of the hatch motor? I have an '83 slam it style hatch... never had a problem! My dad's has the pull down, but I can't figure out the purpose of it.

From "Camaro The Third Generation" by Michael Lamm: " A subtle 1986 standard add-on was the power hatch closing mechanism. Its main purpose was to pull the glass down snug without anyone having to slam it. Additionally, it automatically released the hatch slightly when you opened either side door, and it retightened the hatch when you shut the doors again.”

Yes, Three banner ads for used Thirdgen parts suppliers here on ThirdGen.org. We've also got Thomas *** at "House of Camaro" in So. Cal. He buys one and two owner cars and strips them for parts which he stocks and ships worldwide. No web page, but you can call him (800) 460-6789. Or you can e-mail him a request tomattrc@aol.com. Lon

It won't open. What it will do is raise slightly from the pressure of closing the door. Then the unit will sense the hatch has raised a little and suck it back down.

Is the opening to prevent your ear drums from exploding? I have noticed pressure when people slam my door WAY too hard... I am glad I don't have a motorized hatch.

I don't believe it, either. Mine never did anything like that even back in 89 when it was brand new.
