Seats backs not locking?
The seats backs in my IROC don't lock, and I haven't installed the new 'bird seats I got, but if they don't lock as well, what seems to be the problem? Thanks.
both sets of my seats do this I accedently fixed the drivers side in my old seats. I pulled the recline lever with the seat all of the way forward while I was sitting in it and it made a loud pop and it started to lock after that.
Bad design. All it takes is for one person who doesn't know better to yank the seat forward and it pops the little barb that locks the back out of place. And 99% of our cars has seen at least one person who doesn't know better.
I had the same prob with my bird,I ended up just replacing both units with new ones, problem fixed
Now if I can stop all my buds from slamming my rear hatch
(I have the automatic pull down version btw) Probably not good for it,I will end up having to replace it before to long

Mine have been the same way since new also. I asked the dealership at the time, and they told me that they are designed to only lock up under sudden deceleration such as an accident. I know that they did lock when I t-boned the Acura that pulled out in front of me back in '99. I barely moved in my seat.
Mine don't lock at all, even under sudden deceleration. I have locked my brakes so hard that all fours tires were smokin' and the pass seatback flew foward, I bet that looked pretty stupid to anybody that saw it happen

sorry guys but I think your on the wrong path, we're not talking about seat belts. Seat BACKS and in fact I have the opposite problem, my passenger seat won't unlock, I'll be happy to trade ya!

my seat back has never locked either, but i too can vouch for them locking locking under fast stops, when i t-boned a VW about a year ago, i wasn't wearing a seat belt (thats a no-no) and the seat back did in fact lock up.
anyone who thinks that thirdgen seat backs are supposed to lock all the time should pick up any 82-92 fbody owners manual and read it. By design the only time the seat backs lock is in the event of an accident.

My stock seats suffered this syndrome. It was really stupid looking to have the passenger seat fold forward under heavy braking. Someone frecommended a simple fix, which I'll pass along. Just recline the passenger seat back a little. It lowers the center of gravity and keeps it from coming forward so easily. Yes I was aware of the info posted. There is also an elaborate test method described in the HELM's manual. I've since replaced the seats with Corbeau's and am much happier. Lon
Newer seats lock back. Personally I've never had a problem with the seats folding up while I was in them. I've been involved in a severe collision in a thirdgen and another time I smoked the brakes stopping in my 91 Formula, neither case left me saying "damn, I wish my seats hadn't folded forward." But many times going into the back seat with my fourthgen leather seats I've said to myself "*** I wish GM hadn't redesigned the locking mechanism." When I drive my thirdgens everyday I fold the seats forward to get into the back seat more often then I come to a quick stop.
