Good idea, but the switches are WAY too deep to even think about putting them in there... and at 4 wires per switch, it would be a good bulk of wiring to run.

Are we talking about actually moving them to that spot?

I have actually thought about doing that to my overhead console that I have in my bird. I think it would be a trick mod. Wireing it up should not be that big of a deal. Just pull the wires up to where they hook into the fuse box/doors and then run them up the inner windshield moulding, then along the top of the windshield and then to the actual switches. You might have to add to the wires a bit,but it shouldn't take too much. As far as switch clearance you should have enough room somewhere along the console, you might have to cut a little metal for them to clear. If I am not mistaken those switches are sorta big though but who says that you have to use the same switches?..hmmmm Some of the newer cars have more compact window switches, you might be able to get a set of the new type to work. Just some ideas.

See the wiring isnt the hard part but the prob i forsee is the size of the switches. and i just bought nos ones for x-mas and they were about 2" deep so i doubt it would work. and cuting metal no no there is to little of it in the car as it is.

Hey how's the console install going? Let me know when it's done, I wanna see it in person. If its a good install pics won't do it justice.

You might be able to put the switches where the roller thingys (that's an industry term) are; should be enough depth there. OR see if you can find different switches (maybe some 'momentary' switches as was discussed in a different thread) to use in place of the stock ones.

IF you want to run a smaller switch, Keep in mind that I beilieve the switch takes all the current for the actual window motor, and there is a lot of power going through them when you use them... You might be able to run smaller wires to a pair of relays for each window and use them that way.

Just a thought, it would be safer...

Thumbs down. How would I lower the windows with the top down?

Well, if the top is down the windows SHOULD be down already. Riding around with windows up and top down is just WRONG!

Omega,
have you ever owned a convertable?

With the Windows up on my 95 Formula 'vert I owned, I could put down the top, look cool, and not get blown all over the place. It actually made a huge difference.

I miss that car... I might buy another some day...

Yeah, they do look cool. I've seen one.

lol at lonsal.

I wouldn't want them up there. I've never had a thirdgen with fast power windows, holding my arm up that long to push the button would start to suck after a while (example, going through a drive-thru window in the rain..window up, down, up, down) Plus, you gotta be careful which finger you use pushing the button. I used my middle finger one time closing the moonroof on another car and some guy flipped out thinking I was giving him the bird. Chased me right into a store. I'd like to move mine to my door one day, though.

88 WS6 TransAm GTA,
it was a 95 (4th gen) not a third gen Formula 'vert. If I remember right only 1000 or so of them made in '95.

Don't forget you'd physically have to get the wires from the dashboard area up to the roof area. Trying to run a bunch of heavy ~12AWG wires up behind your a-pillar trim panels would be troublesome.

Could use relays and then run relatively thin wire to the switches.

Another thought is that looking overhead when you want to rollup the windows is distracting if your driving. Look away from the road for a couple seconds and you greatly increase your risk of having a collision.

Actually getting the wires up there would not be a biggie, there is plenty of room up there, to get the wires TO the center console. I would use zip ties and attach the wires to the existing wires already there.

The problem area will be where the overhead console is. The OHC is pretty snug, and too thick or too many wires always seems to create a probem.

I know what you mean--with the top down in my dad's 98 Z-28 vert, putting the windows up really cut down on the wind. All the same though, I think it looks retarded and never put the windows up when I was driving.

I agree, with the top down (which is 90% of the time) the windows are down. The exception is when driving at night with the top down. Having the windows up provides enough of a warmth with the heater cranked up. Well, it USED to. I need to swap my 160 degree thermostat back for the stock 195 for the winter months. IMO, if you like the mod do it. I've done several mods to my car that are unique, but this isn't one of them. Lon
