Door-mounted cup holder / map pocket things?
Door-mounted cup holder / map pocket things?
I've noticed from looking at interior pics of third-gen cars, particularly later years, some cars have a plastic cup holder / map pocket combo mounted on the lower front part of the doors, in place of the regular map pockets.
My questions:
1) What models / years were these cup holder things available?
2) If I had a third-gen with the regular map pockets, how hard would it be to replace them with the cup holder things? Would I also have to replace the door panels?
(I saw the tech article about making cup holders in place of the Camaro ashtray, but that wouldn't work on a Trans Am, and cups in that location would block access to the radio.)
I'm tired of splashing Starbucks coffee all over my seats and myself each morning... Any help appreciated!

I can say that the mounting holes in the door were already there on my 90 Camaro. They are the square holes that you push a plastic plug into (commonly used to mount license plate frames). I only had to carrefully transfer the hole locations to my inner door panel. Then I poked it through the carpeting & cardboard backing with an awl. Then I enlarged it with a larger punch and trimmed the excess from the hole with a utility knife from the inside. I initially tried drilling it through, but the fibers of the carpeting kept getting snagged on the drill. These won't fit on cars with manual window cranks. Lon

They were put on 90-92 Firebird/Trans Am/GTA's. Not sure about the camaros though. They do come in handy I gotta say cause they can hold a Supersize McDonalds cup, and dont get in your way! Those mother f'ers are huge!
Just a side note, that the 4th gen console cup holders are worthless, especially if you have a 5 speed!

Understand about TGR, I just thought when he said aftermarket for Camaros that he might know of something cool that wasn't the same as the stock Firebird ones.
$80 is pretty steep, although I could easily eat up that much money in lost work time looking in yards. But who knows what else I might find :-).

I like the handiness of the cupholder/map pockets on the door, the only complaint I ever had was all the driver side ones seem to be broken. Not to mention, every time I got out of the car in a tight situation where I could not open my door all the way I would bump them with my foot.

I have a mint, left and right pocket/cup holder that came off my 91 Bird, all hardware included. Buckskin in color, but could be painted any color to match your interior. Give me a holler if anyone is interested.
See, yall waited too long

I believe a THANK YOU is in order here
They aren't aftermarket, GM is still producing them. A new set from GM used to come in about $50, now a set with the trim plugs is closer to $80. I've got a set in gray for sale.
