What year rear windows with 3rd brake light fit my 85?

I was at the junk yard over the week end and picked up some rear interior brackets, a new resevoir and a seat belt.

I noticed a 3rd brake light on the rear hatch (me wants)

I could not tell from just looking if it would fit though (was in hurry)

has anyone switched rear hatches from newer third gens to thier older 3rd gens?

or I wonder if i can just pop the rear brake light out and wire it in...(prob 2 much trouble)

It'll definitely fit. You'll have to wire the brake light in--not a big deal. Is the 3rd break light from an 86--or is it mounted on the INSIDE of the hatch glass?

The only year that the third brake light came on the rear hatch window was in 1986. I had one on mine (86 IROC) but hated the way it looked, so I took it off. I believe the thing gets power through metallic strips, just like the defrost, so you would either have to get the whole hatch (which has two holes in the glass where the light mounts by the way), or somehow drill some holes in your glass and run a wire and splice it in with one of your brake lights. Sounds like alot of trouble to me, but can be done.
And I imagine a whole hatch would be pretty exspensive, maybe you could find a good deal on one.

it may be cheaper to find a spoiler from a 90's model with the third brake light in it than it will to replace the whole rear hatch.

I think 87 was the only year that the t-top/hard top Camaros had the spoiler mounted third break lights... Converts from 87-92 had them here too so I'd assume that they'd want big $$$ for the spoiler (if they even know; most tend to want more for 'vert parts)

87-90 had the third brake light in the spoiler. 86 had the external center high-mount brake light, and 91/92 had the internal CHMBL. I personally dislike the 91/92 style light because it gets in your field of view in the rear view mirror. I didn't like the 86 light until I saw, I think Blue502's, who had painted it body color. Then it looked a lot better.

If you get the spoiler mounted 3BL (with hatch), then be sure to get the plastic trim panel that covers the pull-down motor and the wiring down there, because the panel has a metal striker plate that powers the brake light.
