extremely important problem

i have an 89 gta and the button on the shifter sticks. if i don't fix this, i could take the chance of bumping it while i'm driving it and really messing up my transmission. how do i get the shifter off and how would i fix it or would i be better off getting a new shifter

There's a little metal clip on the radio pod side of the shifter that you have to pry out with a small flathead screwdriver in order to remove the shifter "head". Once you get it off I'd just hose that baby down with brake cleaner while operating the button repeatedly (actually check to make sure brake cleaner doesn't discolor the plastic before going whole hog). Then you should be good to go - or give it a little shot of graphite and work that in by using the button repeatedly. I'm not sure I'd use WD-40, though it may work alright, because supposedly it turns to varnish over time - which may cause the exact same problem to recur down the road.

My $.0197865,

Steve

There are several things that could be causing this... Start at the shift ****, if the button doesn't stick witht he **** removed then check the shifter itself. If the plastic shaft is sticking in the shifter tube there's the problem. Also check the spring and detents on the lower part of the shifter assembly. Make sure the wiring and such is clear and isn't contacting any of the moving parts.
