key will not turn

i have an 86 camaro. the key will not turn backwards to supply power without having to turn the car on. can it turn backwards? and how do i fix this problem?

Yes, it should turn backwards. You are probably having a switch that is going bad. The only way to fix the problem is to replace it. I've replaced a few and it's fairly inexpensive. They run about $20, unless your's has a chip in the key, then it's like $50. It's not that hard to replace either.

chip? i dont know if it has one. can u send me instructions on how to fix? all i know is it is an 86 z-28. i has the 305 with the rochester 4bbl. it is computer controlled.

Actually, since you have an 86, you don't have the chip. The installation in pretty easy. I don't have any pics though. Basically you need to pull the stering whell and remove the plate underneeth(spelling?), you'll need to get a special tool for the job($12 at autozone). Next is to remove the electronics, 3 or 4 screws. At last there is 1 screw holding the switch in place. Pull it out and put put the new one back in. Then put things back together. If you have a haynes manual, it will show pictures and give a better explanation. I did my first one without a manual, it's that easy.
