I know its kinda dumb to go in reverse like this but im swapping out my power windows for manuals. Is the regulator different on the crank assembly? i need to know if i just need to get the crank assembly or if i need the whole regulator assembly from a manual window car. And by the way, im doing this primarily to delete as much wiring as possible and to save a lil weight

 

Make ya a deal, you send me all your stuff from power windows, ill send you all my stuff from my manuals(i dont need wiring, just motors, tracks, blah blah) and ill toss in a few extra bucks?

looks like i'm finally going to do the manual crank window to power window swap this week. anything to watch out for?

i've already acquired both power regulator assemblies (drivers & passengers), wiring, switches, and an oversized rivet gun. for mounting the switches, i'm leaning towards using a dremel to cut some small rectangular holes in the console cover.

 

finally started the manual -> power window conversion. am documenting the process as i go along with digital pictures, so i can write up a tech article for other thirdgen enthusiasts. (i realize there's already a "Power Windows, 101" tech article but it doesn't cover the manual->power conversion)

one point of intrest, there are 8 circular holes drilled into the door shell in a rectangular pattern around where the window regulator mounts. manual crank regulator only uses 4 holes to mount. if swapping in a power regulator, you'll use the other 4 holes as the power regulator mounting plate has the mounting holes drilled in a slightly different location than the manual one.

tough to describe, but you'll see what i mean if you remove the interior door panel.

 

2Vmodular............once again, im not converting to electric, im instead converting my electric to manual windows. What do i need to do to do this? And what do i have to have as far as parts go? Is the gear pattern different on the elecrtic window regulator different than the gear pattern on the manual crank assembly? Anyone know? If so please get in touch with me on this.

 

you're not going to save much weight by removing the power window regulators and instead installing manual ones. every ounce counts though in bracket racing.

anyways, everything inside the door is the same between the manual crank windows & the power windows except for the regulator/motor assembly. the window, all the tracks, bolts, and other parts will interchange.

only difference that may suprise you is the mounting hole location is a little different for a power regulator vs a manual regulator. but both sets of holes are within half an inch of each other. on the thirdgen i was working on, the holes were predrilled in the door shell for both types of regulators.

 

alright cool......so all i need is the crank assembly? U know the whole thing that goes in place of the power window motor

 

yep, the only parts you'll need will be two window regulators (passenger & drivers) and some rivets to hold the regulators to the door shell.

allow yourself a weekend for this project. the task sounds simple at first "just swap out the regulators". but is labor intensive when you physically do the swap.

pictured is the manual regulator mounted to the interior door shell. if a power regulator were mounted, it would use the set of 4 holes a little bit to the right, instead of the 4 holes that currently have rivets in them.

 

finally finished the manual -> power window conversion project.

Got all the wires run, regulators riveted to the door shell, holes cut in the center console for the switches, switches mounted and the DEI 530T window module installed. Is convienent to have power windows, but am not sure if it was worth all the effort.

one touch features of dei530 window module are a nice addition, just quickly tap the up or down button once & release and the window will roll all the way up or down. much like the autodown feature in fourthgens except it works in both directions up & down and on both doors passengers & drivers.
