Maybe a worn out spring, or something broken in the button mechanism? If it were me I'd go down to the local U-Pull It and get a good ebrake, then install the new one with your old leather handle. Pretty simple to do.

I had the same problem

When my e-brake started rattling, it about drove me crazy. What I did was :

First I removed the leather boot.

Then I placed some rubber stripping between the spring and the walls of the handle.

Finally I placed a very small amount of grease around the coil spring and the button rod.

That seemed to fix my problem.

I just tightened the screw in the side of the handle. It pressed the handle against the button and stopped it from rattling.
