The early iron calipers had a lot of problems. If you have to replace them look into installing the aluminum ones - post 1987 I think.

If you have to replace the brakes go to the '89-97 PBR rear brakes. They give you a larger rotor and an aluminum caliper. All you'd need is the brakes and the 10 bolt backing plates for the rearend you will get. If looking used, go to www.tacreationsusa.com. Their rear brakes are $150 used. If you want a new kit, they're out there for $600 or so, Baer is $800 for the same thing.

If you should decide to go with Ed's suggestion, check the following link:

Early rear disc calipers are around $80 each not including the core charge. Although they are commonly labeled as having problems if you regularly use the hand brake you shouldn't have any problems. If your car has drum brakes you'll need to install rear disc hand brake cables. These are still available from GM and only about $25 each.

That's the problem...no one does, and if he has to replace the calipers anyway why not upgrade to a system that is proven to work regularly?

GM has discontinued these cables. You can get them at Napa though. An aftermarket piece but still pretty good at $20 each.

I've had my car since 86 - using the handbrake didn't help much. If you're changing them anyway might as well install the PBRs if you can.

The 83-88 rear disc cables are still available(which is what I was refering to above) I just ordered some from my Pontiac dealer last month.

I've since swapped in PBR's (check the above link), but in advance of that, the old iron calipers were rebuilt with a GM kit of some sort that cured my ills. I used the handbrake religiously and never had another problem. I wouldn't return to the old style, however .
