Recall? Am I stuck paying anyways?

Whats the deal with a E-Brake recall. I read somewhere on the search forums that there was one for my car specifically, 1984 Sport Coupe. Seeing as its 2005.... Am I going to be stuck paying for repairing the E-Brake? It doesn't work at all... engages and all that good stuff but car still rolls. Again, I did do the search for this problem and came up with some.. well... I guess you can call "Solutions".

If I do have to pay (pretty sure I will get shafted and have to) , anyone know how much it might cost to get the E-Brake fixed?

84 sport coupe, 2.8L 5spd.....

As I "recall" on a situation like this, there is no time limit or ownership issues involved. The dealership should run your vin to determine whether a fix has been completed, and if not GM is obligated to repair the problem cost free. There was a technical service bulletin (TBS) concerning the problem at one point. You might search for that for more info.

By the way, the repair was only for manual tranny cars.

Ok thats good to know, I do have the manual transmission , T5. But I got this from a private owner. Do I just talk to a local chevy dealership about this? The closest one to me is "Duteau Chevrolet", they are a gm certified dealership ( I think thats the name of certification)

Take it to the dealership. When or where you purchased the car shouldn't matter.

Was that recall for manual trans. cars w/rear disc brakes, or ALL types of rear brakes?

Your fronts are discs. Compare them to the rears.

Sorry for the lack of response, I've been quite busy the last few days.

I checked my rear brakes and they are drum brakes. Not discs. Looks like I gotta try and fix this myself. Is there something immediately to look for when trying to diagnose the E-Brake problem? I took a look under the car today and tried to trace the E-Brake to a cord or something and I didn't see anything. I could have been looking in the wrong spot, I just checked right under where the E-Brake is inside. Is there a common , per se, problem with E-Brake that is related third gen Camaros?

Try taking the brakes apart and cleaning and lubricating the self-adjusting mechanism first. Often with drums that's all that's required.

How long a job do you think that will be? I really want this fixed today but have some plans. Is there an estimation of how much time I'll be spending with my car?

If you're familiar with how the mechanism goes together, maybe 10 minutes a side. If you're not, maybe an hour or so for both.

OK thanks... can you tell me what to look for when doing the brakes? This haynes manual sucks big time for E-Brake work... has like 1 paragraph on it.

It's all covered in the Haynes manual under drum brakes.

I couldn't even get the drum cover portion off. Its supposed to just pull off. I gave it all the force in the world and tried to crowbar it off, it just wasn't budging.

I think I'm just gonna break down and take this to a shop. One of the few shops I trust does rear drum brake service for 90 dollars..... going to see if they'll fix the ebrake and how much it'll cost. Hopefully not too much..

Soak it down a bit (maybe some brake cleaner fluid), let sit for a few minutes, then whack around on the backside lip of the drum as well as here and there on the front. Should loosen up and come right off. Ninety dollars seems exorbitant for such a minor fix.
