Want to swap old drum brake rear with new posi disk brake rear NEED SOME HELP

Want to swap old drum brake rear with new posi disk brake rear NEED SOME HELP

Hi everyone My name is rico i am new to this site i was told someone here could help me with my small problem. I want to switch my rear end with a posi unit with disk brakes from another car. Thing is i am wondering what year rear end from another car could i use that has posi and disk brake. the other thing is what else would i have to chang to complete the conversion of drum brakes to disk brakes. I am looking for a rear with 3.42 all the other stuff i need to complete the conversion. I any one could help me on what i need and were i can get it all the rear and all the other parts in need. Also what should i look for in the rear like to make sure its posi and other things like that like if its worth getting ect. Please write back or e-mail me at rik81584@yahoo.com.

Any rear from a Camaro or Firebird form 1982 to 2002 will bolt right in. The '93+ rears are a couple of inches wider, so using one of them would make your rear track width wider than the front. Some guys like that, some guys don't.

The '88 and older rears had crappy disc brakes...the '89+ brakes are better and the '98+ brakes are MUCH better (although you'll have to fab a bracket for the E-brake cable to use them.) They were all available with posi.

Some '85-89 cars had a 9-bolt rear, as compared to the 10-bolt they used in all the other cars (count the bolts on the diff. cover to tell between the two.) The 9-bolt is stronger, but harder to find parts for.

The older rears ('82-'86 or so) may have used a different thread pitch on the brake lines, which would have to be adapted to work.
