Where is that LEAK

noticed one of the rear drivers side brake was leaking brake fluid because the inside of the rim was covered in it. So I got the my cousin who's knows a little about cars and ****, so we jacked it up, took off the tire and then removed the caliper. We noticed the leak was not coming from there, he thinks it is a seal in the drum that went out, we where going to remove the entire thing but we don't know if we would have to take it to a machine shop to put it back on since we would have to unscrew the rear end axle, I think that is what it is called. Anyways I am confused and I am hope I am making some sense with this post, help me straighten this crap out.

I am confused, do you have rear disc brakes or drums? If they are drums check the cylinder that is near the top that pushes the shoes out when the brake is engaged. I have had those blow a seal and leak exactly how you describe. Any parts store will carry the rebuild kits for around $5. You can do this yourself. No machine shop required. And you won't have to remove the axles or anything.

Well in that case, chech the hose leading to the caliper. If that appears fine, no cracks or anything then just replace the caliper. They are cheap on our cars and an easy replacement. You may have to replace both.

Did your brake pedal get real soft and go to the floor when you stopped?

It may also be a bearing seal. I haven't seen one of those leak quite like that, but while you are there, check the fluid level in the differencial.

What I would first determine is if it is brake fluid of gear oil. axle seals will leak in the manor you descibed and often cover your brakes with oil, ruining them.
