Well I knew I was gonna need new brakes soon. but when the car was on jack stands the other day i could not even spin the wheel one full turn in the front. it would go maybe halfway and make a sandpaperish sound the whole time. so yea, as soon as the car can move (blew trans, swapping to t5) i need to get a brake job. what are some decent cheap brakes. im not looking for anything special...i guess just something with a low cost and good reliability/life. i dont need anything neat looking or that will stop me form 60 in like 2 seconds. just something of good quality that will last me a while for a low price. i dont even know what prices brakes start around, could be 100, could be 1000...no idea. thanks a lot.

Car: too many ...
I would say remove the calipers and hang them with a wire, remove and inspect the pads (replace if totally worn down around $60 or so), then pull the rotors and have them turned at a local auto parts store (like $10-$20 hopefully enough material left), then buy new wheel bearings (dont remember price, but they are cheap), some grease to re-pack the bearings as well as to grease the caliper adjusting bolts (also cheap). Then put it all back together making sure to properly grease everything and see how it feels. From my experience the scraping sound could be caused by pad contact, could be either a stuck adjusting bolt (or adjusting carrier) causing the caliper to adjust wrong, or the pads could be totally worn and the marker is scraping the rotor. When those adjusting bolts get dirty sometimes they wont adjust properly, they need to be re-greased. Do the rotors have lines ground into them? That would be an indication of a pad issue. If the fronts are really worn out you might want to service the rears too (which is pretty much the same minus wheel bearings). While doing mine I also replaced the rubber lines and when I was done I flushed and re-bled the system with better fluid.

i have drum rears. the first thing my mechanic said when i got the car inspected was that i would need new brakes in like 10k, and that was like a little less than 2k ago. he even mentioned it before he mentioned the obvious crazy idle and snapping into gear.

brakes
There is no such thing as good bargain brakes. I recommend Napa brakes and rotors if you need them, get their best stuff, maybe your rotors can be turned. How old are the calipers and front brake hoses?

Car: 98 z28
Engine: ls1
Transmission: t56
Axle/Gears: soon to be 3.73's
If they stop with only a half turn, wouldn't that make the rotor warped. I would say get new pads, turn the rotors, and repack the bearings. I just did a brake job on my friends 00 z28 and it cost 30 bucks in parts, 50 labor , it's stops wonderfully now.
